Chinese Tattoo Confirmation?
loading...
I want to get a tattoo that represents family in Chinese, I had a calligrapher design this for me : http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y186/psuperman112/family-fluidv.gif
Can someone confirm for me that it says family before I get it tattooed?
Yes, i agree with them too, only the first character ?"jia" is better and more suitable. The combined two characters ??"jia ting" means more about household and homeware.
But there are many other stylised and artistic chinese fonts you can choose from. The chinese fonts that you showed me is the more common style. I have actually done some typing and uploaded an image with more fonts options of the letter ?"jia" for you. Take a look , You may choose the one you like best for your tattoo.

You can tell that all of them are the same character , but in different forms of writting, Except the last 2 fonts in the bottom left, they look different from the others because they are very ancient chinese fonts from the ancient chinese emperor days thousands years ago. These kind of ancient fonts are not used for writting in mordern days anymore, but some people like to use them in art work and tattoos, as they are more mysteriously unique and meaningful.
i hope that my answear is helpful, good luck!

Yes, but you could just use the first character (the top one) and spare yourself the pain and expense of two characters. The first one alone means family or home/house. The two together mean something more like "household".

Yes, just go for the first one. It is pronounced 'jia' and means family (or home). The character actually represents a pig with a roof over it (because a house needs a roof and (I assume) traditionally, most houses had a 'pet' pig).

I share the same opinion with erlampo and Aidant, ? and ?? both means family, so why don't you get a tattoo of ?only?

the first letter is good by itself

I often see people with chinese characters tattooed onto their body and for the most part, these characters are written correctly, but its meaning becomes diminished. The great thing about the Chinese language is that you don't have to be literal to get your point across. There is always a more better sounding way to communicate than using plain and literal terms. You're probably confused. I guess my point of view would only be important depending on the crowd who will be seeing your tattoo. To white people who see the english word "family," they would think respect and loyalty. To a chinese person who sees the chinese character tattooed, they'd probably think its a bit odd because its just a word. It could sound nicer as an idiom. Ack. NVM. I can't properly voice the idea I am trying to get across. I hope this made some sense.

Just using the first character is a good idea. The second character means salon or chamber. The two together mean basically home, even though the first one is usually used to express "home" like "I am going home."
It really doesn't mean "family" if you want to say exactly that you would want to use the first character ? and add the character for person ? after it. This is actually expressing the idea of "family".
The Chinese girl upstairs made a good point. You may be better off using a single character that expresses your feeling for "family", respect, admiration, love, etc. because anyone who sees that character and understands Chinese well will just think you have "home" tattooed on you.

It’s cool you want to tattoo “family” on you which shows your dedication, loyalty, and respect but why in a language you know nothing about? Is it because it looks “cooler” and “exotic”? This reminds me of white guys who have Asian fever.
