The symbol has to mean something like (love, fire, etc.), also has to have meaning specially to you, and can't be a person's name.

I would pick one that looked really neat and had a pleasant meaning (like happiness or tranquility or love).

If you are talking about lettering, I would not because to many of them do not mean what you think they do and you might get something that you think is love or happiness and end up with cheeseburger. other than that I would get a koi fish, I love them.

I have the Kanji (Japanese) for Dragon in the black outline only on my ankle. It's simple and surprises people when they see it. Dragon is my zodiac and shows my personality and was the ending of highschool with some really stressful personal problems mixed in all at once. I've taken some hype for getting a Japanese character while not being Japanese but I don't really care. The symbol suited me best and tattoos are entirely personal right? Anyway, love the question, getting a star!
-Kanji is Japanese, it's the Japanese writing for Chinese words. My tattoo artist told me when I asked while getting mine and I found a source with the history of Kanjis stating this.

I probably wouldn't get the japanese form of tattoo (also known as "Haringa" [Ha-ring-gah/Ha-reng-gah]) because it focuses mainly on words & pharses. You on the other hand are refering to "Kanji" (which is chinese); a very popular form of tattoo. I have one on my arm inspired from the virtues of their tarot form called the "I-Ching" that means "quieting the heart" (virtue #52). What it means to me is that one can find spiritual balence in themselves. Here are some common choices & their translations (mine by the way is "Ken" [Ken/Kin]):
Love ("Ai" [Eye]); female
Strengh/Power ("Te" [like the letter, T]); males mostly but also mainly females
Friendship ("Gebo" [Gay-bow]) used by both, but mostly females
Here's also a site to try out. Good luck!
